When
it comes to gym equipment, safety is key. Of course, many people do
not really consider safety when they are shopping for gym
equipment. Understandably, people are generally much
more interested in how many calories that gym equipment will help
them burn, how usable the equipment is, and/or how they will look
and feel after using it.
However, people should also consider safety when looking at gym equipment.
There are many times and places when safety should be considered:
• When buying your gym equipment, consider the safety features
it has to offer. A treadmill should have an automatic “off”
function for if you fall. Weight machines should have range-of-motion
limiters
• Make sure that the machine is very stable! All the parts should
move well within it, too.
• A heart rate monitor is also an excellent safety feature –
you can monitor your heart rate and lessen the intensity of your workout
when your heart rate is too high.
• Look for gym equipment that is adjustable. Using a machine
that is “too big” or “too small” for you could
lead to injury.
• Make sure that any special advertising claims for your gym
equipment are backed up by good research.
• Read reviews, like “Consumer Reports” to find
out about the safest machines.
• If you have back problems or knee problems, talk to a doctor
before purchasing any gym equipment. For instance, rowing machines
are not the best equipment for persons with back problems. Treadmills
are not the best if you have knee problems, etc.
• When placing your gym equipment in your home, consider the
safest place to place it. Think about traffic flow – you don’t
want people to be banging their elbows against it or tripping on it
in the middle of the night!
• Protect your flooring and prevent your machine from slipping
by using a gym equipment mat beneath it.
• If you have children, be sure that you teach them not to play
on or around your gym equipment – it is not made for bodies
so small.
• Keep your free weights securely in a weight rack. Again, tell
your children to stay away from them – you do not want a weight
to fall on a child’s foot!
• Make sure that all moving parts are covered – you don’t
want there to be a place where a child can get a finger caught!
• Turn off the machine when you are not using it. You may even
want to unplug it.
• When exercising on your gym equipment, pay attention to your
body. If your body starts to hurt, lessen the intensity of your workout
or stop completely! If your body continues to hurt, see a doctor.
• Slowly increase your intensity. Similarly, do not lift more
weight than you can manage.
It is very important to consider safety when picking out your gym
equipment, when placing it and storing it in your home, and when using
it. Be safe!
