Elliptical
trainers, some say, belong in every home gym. In fact,
make one of our elliptical trainers your next addition (or your first
addition) to your home gym. If you have never tried out elliptical
trainers before, sneak down to your local gym and hop on one! That
is, hop on one of they are not all already taken – many people
are hopping off the treadmills and the stationary bikes in favor of
elliptical trainers.
The reason that many people are switching to elliptical trainers
is because they are so fun to use and so low impact, but still offer
an excellent, full body workout. Treadmills and stationary bikes are
still excellent pieces of fitness equipment, of course, but sometimes
your body (and your motivation) just needs something new.
Using elliptical trainers might be that “something new”
that your body needs. Cross training is always a good thing. Doing
only one form of exercise, like running, day after day is not going
to help you lose weight and maintain an interest in sticking to your
workout as much as changing your workout routine. Why not change your
workout routine a bit by including an elliptical trainer in it?
When shopping for an elliptical trainer, there are a few things that
you want to keep in mind:
- Stride - make sure that the elliptical trainer has a long enough
stride for you. This is especially important if you are very tall.
A stride of only 14 inches is not likely to be enough for a tall
person.
- Incline - many elliptical trainers have an incline option. By using
the incline option, you can vary the intensity of your workout, and
even change which muscles you are working the hardest. An incline
option is not necessarily, but it can prove beneficial. Choose to
focus on your calves, quads, or gluts!
- Arms handles - you can get a great workout, even on elliptical
trainers without arm handles. Nonetheless, you can burn more calories
and change your workout routine by using elliptical machines with
arm handles. These can be especially useful if you want to work
on enhancing your upper body strength.
- Heart rate monitors - while elliptical trainers with heart rate
monitors are going to cost you extra, the extra price can be worth
it. You can monitor your heart rate, helping you ensure that you get
the safest and most effective workout, possible. Some elliptical trainers
have heart rate monitors directly in the arm handles. Others require
you to wear a band around your chest. Many people prefer to wear a
heart rate monitor around their chests -- they tend to be more accurate.
- Display and options - look for elliptical trainers that will best
suit your workout. You want one with an easy-to-read and easy-to-use
display. You want to be able to create a workout that best suits
you. You want to be able to have a variety of workouts. Look for
elliptical trainers that give you the variety you need.
- Price - oftentimes, what it all comes down to is price. How much
can you pay? How much are you willing to pay? Know that you do not
need a big, heavy, expensive piece of exercise equipment to get
a good workout. Nonetheless, oftentimes those extra features - the
features that come with a heavy price tag attached - can enhance
your workout and even get you to get back on the machine. It is
better to spend a lot on a machine that you will use a lot as opposed
to a little on a machine that you do not enjoy using. Know that
it is possible to find good elliptical trainers that will not break
the bank.
Good luck shopping for and using your new elliptical trainers.
